My name is “Wingit” and I am attempting an Appalachian Trail 2024 Thru Hike - without much of a plan, in fact, I am Winging it along the way. Here is another day I am grateful to share with everyone.

At the half way point of my attempted thru hike of the Appalachian Trail, I was asked about what it takes to be successful when hiking this trail. I give my opinion as to the most important factor during my own hike, and I think most will be surprised as to how I answer this question. Many factors come into play, and many people will say it’s 80% mental and 20% physical; but what does this actually mean?

If you could only pick one trait would it be discipline? Perseverance? Resiliency? Will Power? Fortitude? Or some other trait? To me, the most important characteristic isn’t something you need to attain or acquire, but rather something you need to let go of - and that is expectations. This letting go of expectations also carries over into life as expectations are the cause of a tremendous amount of suffering.

I would like to hear from those who have completed a successful they hike as well as others as to their answers as I have not accomplished what I set out to do as of yet. I am just a guy walking the woods and mountains at this point.

Please comment and share your experience for others as your answers could help someone prepare for the journey of a lifetime.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you haven’t joined us on this journey, please subscribe and join us as we all trek the road together.

DONATIONS - My needs are met so
ANY & ALL donations will be utilized to help less fortunate hikers. Many are hiking with minimal food & substandard gear, infrequent opportunities to get out of inclement weather, do laundry, or acquire a bunk at a local hostile. Many survive by donated gear from hiker boxes to experience the magic of the Appalachian Trail.

I believe the gift is in the give and utilize every opportunity to be of service to others; on the trail and off. I do what I can, any additional contributions will further validate the AT Mantra “The Trail Provides.”

Love & Peace,

“Wingit”
