My name is “Wingit” and I am attempting an Appalachian Trail 2024 Thru Hike - without much of a plan, in fact, I am Winging it along the way. Here is another day I am grateful to share with everyone.

Today was one of the toughest days since I have been on trail, which is unusual for me. We all have days like this - for me though, they are highly unusual at this stage in my life.

I have been dealing with discomfort since day 1 and that is ok - but recently the discomfort has been unusual. Body aches, neck stiffness, mild headache, and fatigue. Couple this with my sore ankle and it was just overwhelming today. My knees and hips have been sore as well as my upper body which is strange in itself.

After voicing some of my discord, my friend Thrive mentioned that these are symptoms of Lyme’s disease which can be acquired from ticks. In fact, it is an endemic in this area. I had a tick bite several weeks ago on my left arm, the same left arm I thought maybe was exposed to poison ivy. The signs were all there for the potential of having been exposed to this disease.

The stubborn part of me would have hiked on and pushed through discomfort, but having good friends encourage me to get it tested and acquire Doxycycline Anti-biotic’s, I caught an Uber off trail in order to go to Waynesboro Emergency Room.

Then the magic happened, I went to CVS to pick up my prescription and while at the counter, the gentleman asked me about insurance to offset the $75 price. I told him my insurance was Veteran Administration (VA Disability) only, and that the price didn’t matter. Shortly after, Lexi - who works at CVS said she has a discount card to offset the price. While I waited for my Rx, Lexi approached me with my script and said she paid for it as her husband is a former active duty Marine and they are currently fighting for his disability.

What a magical moment and amazing display of kindness. I returned to the trail, and hiked my way up to Raven Rocks Shelter for the night.

Thank you Lexi and Trenton, may you be filled with joy for the upcoming arrival of your child. This is one of the most magical moments for me on trail.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you haven’t joined us on this journey, please subscribe and join us as we all trek the road together.

DONATIONS - My needs are met so
ANY & ALL donations will be utilized to help less fortunate hikers. Many are hiking with minimal food & substandard gear, infrequent opportunities to get out of inclement weather, do laundry, or acquire a bunk at a local hostile. Many survive by donated gear from hiker boxes to experience the magic of the Appalachian Trail.

I believe the gift is in the give and utilize every opportunity to be of service to others; on the trail and off. I do what I can, any additional contributions will further validate the AT Mantra “The Trail Provides.”

Love & Peace,

“Wingit”
