We left the UN Biodiversity Summit this year with a full heart and hope for the future: in the Village and beyond, it was inspiring to see the impact of Indigenous-led conservation around the world – and all that’s possible for the future. At COP15, Environment and Climate Change Minister Guilbeault shared that “any new conservation project that is proposed in Canada now must have Indigenous People at the table, from the get-go.” This approach – one that recognizes Indigenous leadership, rights, and knowledge – can help Canada become a global leader, not only in biodiversity protection, but also in human rights.
