A great opening image is a microcosm for your entire story. Just as we can learn about a mountain from a single grain of sand, a powerful opening image will establish a story's tone, theme, narrative voice, and sometimes even the lead character. The principles behind the Opening Image will apply for the opening paragraphs of a novel, the Cold Open of a TV show, or even the portico of an architectural wonder.
