Now streaming on Netflix, Atlas stars Jennifer Lopez in a sci-fi tale exploring the relationship between humans and AI. It's a story that resonated deeply with the film's lead star, playing a big part in why Lopez was so eager to get on board.

In an interview with CBR's Katie Doll, Lopez and co-star Sterling K. Brown discussed working on Atlas. For her part, Lopez shared how she was drawn to the project because of its "beautiful" story. In the film, she plays a data analyst who deeply distrusts artificial intelligence, but she may have to learn to come to trust it in order to save humanity. Lopez believes that struggle is something that many people can relate to.

"For me, the kind of relationship between Atlas and the artificial intelligence was really interesting," Lopez said. "I remember the first time I read the script, I sobbed and I thought, 'Yeah, this is a sci-fi [movie]. This is an action movie.' But there's a really beautiful story about how these two kind of entities come together and really become more human. Smith becomes more and more human, and so does Atlas. That relationship of learning how to trust someone when you've never trusted anything since you were a child because of some traumatic event that happened to you is something that a lot of people can identify with."

Brown also addressed how the rise of AI is something everybody's talking about these days. Referring to the debate over both the benefits and issues of AI use, the actor noted how Atlas is interesting as it explores both sides of the equation, further making it more difficult to know whether or not AI is a good thing.

"The exploration of the topic is something that is very much at the forefront of our consciousness right now," Brown said. "To be able to tell a story that forecasts the beauty of what it could be and the horror of what can be... I think that's what we're all talking about in our heads. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?"

Atlas is now streaming on Netflix.
