Dr. Carlos:
Garlic is recognized as one of the most powerful and affordable foods available. It boasts numerous properties, including antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antioxidant effects. Beneficial for cardiovascular health, cholesterol management, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and has anti-cancer properties, garlic is also effective against inflammation and high blood pressure. The scientific evidence supporting the benefits of garlic is remarkable.

However, many people make mistakes in consuming garlic that diminish its beneficial effects. The first common mistake is consuming cooked garlic. Garlic should always be consumed raw, as cooking it leads to a loss of its properties, including its valuable antioxidants. Therefore, the best way to consume garlic is in its natural, uncooked state.

Another common mistake is the way garlic is stored in the kitchen. It's important to consider the temperature and humidity of the storage area. The ideal temperature is below 25 °C, as higher temperatures can diminish its properties. Humidity also plays a crucial role; if garlic is exposed to high levels of humidity, it can begin to lose its properties. Additionally, it's recommended to avoid direct sunlight and consume garlic in moderate amounts, keeping it always dry, fresh, and in a dark, cool place.

The third frequent error is not consuming enough garlic to reap all its benefits. The optimal dose ranges between 2 and 5 grams per day, equivalent to one or two cloves of garlic. If opting for supplements, aged garlic extract is recommended, which should be taken in doses of over 900 mg per day for optimal effectiveness. Doses can vary between 900 mg and 3 grams. Garlic oil extract is also an option, with doses around 5 mg.

The last and probably most important common mistake is not crushing, cutting, or mashing garlic before consumption. These processes allow allicin, garlic's main active component, to be released and activated. It's recommended to cut or crush garlic and wait a few minutes for it to fully activate before adding it to foods. It's crucial to remember that garlic should not be cooked with high heat, as this would destroy its properties. The best way to incorporate it into food is by adding it raw and fresh at the end of cooking.

In summary, garlic is an incredibly beneficial food, whose properties can be maximized by avoiding these common mistakes in its consumption and storage. Consuming garlic the right way can be an easy and effective addition to a healthy diet.
