I am a big fan of self-scar massage, a natural scar treatment after surgery that you can perform on yourself to improve scar tissue adhesions, pain, and mobility! In this video, we discuss tissue healing and the potential benefits of scar massage, before walking through how to perform different self-scar massage techniques in real time. Cheers to natural scar treatment at home!

✩ Scar Tissue Healing: 1:33

After a deep wound is inflicted, like a surgical incision, tissue healing occurs in three phases: the inflammatory phase, the proliferation phase, and the remodeling phase. Scar maturation happens during the remodeling phase, which lasts anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 years after initial injury.

Because of the way that collagen grows during the remodeling phase, scar tissue can affect the muscle tissue that lives beneath it, making it more difficult to activate those muscles than before the injury. Scar tissue and its surrounding skin can also become numb, hypersensitive, or painful.

✩ Potential Benefits of Scar Massage: 4:04

We think scar massage might be able to break up “adhesions,” or improve scar tissue’s mobility, flexibility, and range of motion. We also think scar massage might be able to restore normal tissue sensation and decrease pain. Finally, we think scar massage might improve blood flow, decrease excessive scarring, and improve the overall appearance of the scar.

✩ Self-Scar Massage Overview: 5:57

Feeling some minor discomfort—like itchiness, tenderness, or burning—during scar massage is normal. While some people like to use lotion/oil during scar massage, I prefer not to, as I feel it makes it more difficult to hold and stretch the tissue.

✩ Scar Massage for Younger Scars: 6:38

I usually use these techniques when working with someone’s scar that is 2-4 months old; however, please ask your surgeon if these techniques are safe for you. You will need clean hands and a hand towel for these techniques.

Ideally, these techniques are both performed 1-2x/day.

→ Mobility: up & down, side to side, clockwise & counterclockwise x 5-10 times per movement, moving the skin all around the entire length of the scar
→ Desensitization: using a dry or wet hand towel, perform the same up & down, side to side, clockwise & counterclockwise motions x 5-10 times on the skin surrounding the entire length of the scar

✩ Scar Massage for Older Scars: 16:22

I usually use these techniques when working with someone’s scar that is 5+ months old; however, please ask your surgeon if these techniques are safe for you. You only need your hands for these techniques.

Ideally, these techniques are both performed 1-2x/day.

→ Mobility: place 2-3 fingers directly on the scar, up & down, side to side, diagonal stretches x 5 seconds per stretch, 5-10 times along the entire length of the scar
→ Skin-Rolling: using thumb and index, or thumb, index, and middle finger, pinch and roll the scar tissue x10 seconds per area along the entire length of the scar
→ “Lazy” Day Technique (or if Skin-Rolling is too difficult): play piano directly on the scar tissue for 2-3 minutes
