Mehmet Basutçu 1952'de Kütahya’da doğdu. Galatasaray Lisesi’ni bitirdikten sonra gittiği Fransa’da kimya ve nükleer fizik dallarında doktora yaptı ve bu ülkeye yerleşti. Uzun yıllar boyunca sinemaya olan ilgisinin yanında bu alanda profesyonel olarak çalıştı. 1980'den bu yana da Türkiye ve Fransa’da sinema ve tiyatro üstüne yazıyor, gazetecilik yapıyor, film festivallerine katılıyor. 1996’da Paris'teki Georges Pompidou Kültür Merkezi’nde dü­zen­lenen “Türk Sineması Toplu Gösterisi”nin sorumluluğunu ve bu etkinlik kapsamında yayınlanan Cinéma Turc başlıklı kitabın editörlüğünü üstlendi. Paris’te, Doğu Dilleri ve Kültürleri Ulusal Enstitüsü'nde (özgün adıyla INALCO’da) Türk Sineması dersleri verdi.

Kendisi ile Paris’te sinema üzerine uzun soluklu bir röportaj gerçekleştirdik. Hem Fransa’da varlık göstermiş olan Türk yönetmenlerinin dününü ve bugününü konuştuk hem de Fransız sinemasının ve onun kültürel boyutlarının özgün yönleri üzerinde durduk. Mehmet bey kişisel tanıklık ve yaşanmışlıklarından yola çıkarak enfes bir panorama çizdi ve beni tarihte bir yolculuğa çıkardı. Fakat bugüne de getirmeyi unutmadı. Adeta Fransız usulü bir Back to the Future filmi gibi.
İtiraf etmeliyim ki Mehmet Basutçu konuşmasındaki zarafeti, tavrında nezaketi, bilgisindeki alçak gönüllülüğünü, sinema bilgisi ile harmanlayarak beni büyüledi. Paris’in Gambetta’daki bir kafede görüşmemize başladık ve bir süre sonra bir tamirat başladı. Ayrıca yemek vaktine denk geldiğimizden bir kalabalık da akın edince sesler birbirine karıştı. İlerleyen dakikalarda sesler sizi rahatsız etmiş olabilir ama röportajın 2. ve 3. Bölümlerini kendi evinde yaptık ve daha rahat bir ortamda söyleşimize devam ettik. PODCAST: Turkish Cinema in France with Mehmet Basutçu (Part 1)
Mehmet Basutçu was born in Kütahya in 1952. After graduating from Galatasaray High School, he went to France, where he received his doctorate in chemistry and nuclear physics, and settled in this country. In addition to his interest in cinema, he has worked professionally in this field for many years. Since 1980, he has been writing about cinema and theatre, working as a journalist, and participating in film festivals in Turkey and France. In 1996, he was responsible for the "Turkish Cinema Mass Performance" held at the Georges Pompidou Cultural Center in Paris and edited the book titled Cinéma Turc, published within the scope of this event. He taught Turkish Cinema at the National Institute of Eastern Languages ​​and Cultures (originally known as INALCO) in Paris.

We had a long interview with him about the cinema in Paris. We talked about the past and present of Turkish directors who have existed in France and also focused on the unique aspects of French cinema and its cultural dimensions. Mr. Mehmet drew an exquisite panorama based on his personal testimonies and experiences and took me on a journey through history. But he did not forget to bring it to this day. It's almost like a French-style Back to the Future movie. I must admit that Mehmet Basutçu fascinated me by blending the elegance in his speech, the kindness in his attitude, and the humility of his knowledge with his knowledge of cinema. We started our meeting in a cafe in Gambetta, Paris, and after a while, a repair started. Also, since it was dinner time, a crowd flocked in and the voices got mixed up. The voices may have disturbed you in the following minutes, but we did the 2nd and 3rd parts of the interview at his home and continued our conversation in a more comfortable environment.
