Princess Hwawan (1737-1808) is the daughter of King Yeongjo, the 21st king of the Joseon Dynasty, and her mother is the daughter of Lee Yu-bun, Lady Sunhui, Royal Noble Consort Yeong. Born as the youngest between King Yeongjo and Lady Sunhui, her older sisters were Princess Hwapyeong and Princess Hwahyeop, and her older brother was Crown Prince Sado and nephew Jeongjo.
After Princess Hwapyeong's death, King Yeongjo's loved Princess Hwawan more than the others, and as she did not give up her father's attention she received, this favoritism caused conflict between the siblings.

She became obsessed with Jeongjo, his nephew after the death of Crown Prince Sado, sometimes going too far as to keep Jeongjo only to herself, showing affection to the extent of bringing jealousy. Even when he was focused on writing the first draft to edit the history books, the she was envious of the attention he gave to the book and even interfered with his interest in a court lady.

As King Jeongjo grew older, the relationship between the two widened, but some argue that her obstruction when King Yeongjo tried to inherit the throne starting with overseeing the King's duties, began from her obsession.
As in the drama "The Red Sleeve," she interfered with King Jeongjo and his stepson Jeong Hu-gyeom's succession to the throne, but given that she devoted all her affection to Princess Jeongjo when they were young, the two seemed to have had a relationship of love and hatred. #The Red Sleeve #JoseonDynasty #History
