One of the most important aspects of getting into a professional career is networking via word of mouth. In this video from the Berklee Online course, Professional Film Scoring Skills 1: Collaboration and Communication, instructor Alison Plante (who co-authored the course with Jeanine Cowen) says that even if you have a great portfolio, it still doesn’t tell your potential employers much about you and your work ethic. How will they know if you are reliable, if you will deliver the assets on time, or most importantly, if you are easy to work with? That’s why many employers ask the people they already trust in order to find a composer for a project. And since those people also don’t want to make fools out of themselves by recommending someone unreliable, they’ll usually go with someone that they are certain can get the work done. And if you don’t have that reputation, chances are people aren’t going to recommend you.
