In this video from the Berklee Online course Touring 101, instructor Bruce Houghton discusses all of the elements that go into making a great gig. He defines a great gig as one where it’s “the right artist in the right venue on the right night at the right ticket price, and everyone who might want to come knows about it.” This is not an easy balance by any means! Setting a price is more of an art than a science, says Houghton. As far as venues go, the location is important, so the artist's fans can get there. The size is important also, because an artist can be performing for their perfect target audience, but if that’s an audience of 100 people in a big venue, the energy could be less than ideal. But in a small venue, the energy would be electric. It’s hard to objectively know what the ideal gig for an artist is, but this course (and even this video!) will show you how to consider all of these factors to work at booking more great gigs. In the end, a lot of it comes down to marketing, says Houghton, because with the right marketing, more people will be at your show, simply because more of the right people know about it.
