The United States Armed Forces completed their withdrawal from Afghanistan on 30 August 2021, marking the end of the 20-year long war in Afghanistan. On 15 August 2021, the Taliban seized the capital city of Kabul as the Afghan government under President Ashraf Ghani dissolved, the speed of which surprised the US government. With Taliban fighters surrounding the city, the US embassy evacuated and retreated to Hamid Karzai International Airport. On 26 August, there was a suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport, killing 11 Marines, one Navy Corpsman and upwards of 70 Afghan citizens. A 13th US service member succumbed to his wounds the next day. Following the last US flight, Taliban soldiers entered the airport and declared victory.
