Osama bin Laden, the founder and first leader of the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda, was killed in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, shortly after 1:00 a.m. by United States Navy SEALs of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group. The operation, code-named Operation Neptune Spear, was carried out in a CIA-led operation with Joint Special Operations Command. The helicopters (modified Black Hawk helicopters) to be used in the raid had been designed to be quiet and to have low radar visibility. As they hovered above the target the first helicopter experienced a hazardous airflow condition known as a vortex ring state. The helicopter's tail grazed one of the compound's walls, damaging its tail rotor and the helicopter rolled onto its side. None of the SEALs, crew, or pilots on the helicopter were seriously injured in the soft crash landing. The SEALs encountered the residents in the compound's guest house, in its main building on the first floor where two adult males lived, and on the second and third floors where bin Laden lived with his family. The second and third floors were the last section of the compound to be cleared. The time between the team's entry in and exit from the compound was 38 minutes
