Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2019 Subaru Ascent, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver. Before we do that though, let's take a couple minutes, check this out and make sure it's gonna work for you. Right off the bat, one of the cool things about this setup is the fact that the hitch can be completely hidden whenever you're not using it. And that's because it sits behind the fascia, and because of its position, it'll allow you to take your removable panel and pop that back into place. And everything looks completely factory back here, but when you're ready to use it, remove a couple of fasteners down here, this pops out, and now you have complete access to it.

Okay, compared to some of the other hitches available for the Ascent, there's some others that sit in the same position and with them, there's not really too much differences, you know, especially in terms of appearance. They might all have a different finish or something on 'em but behind the panel, you're never gonna see it, and when you have it off, it's not really a huge deal anyway, right And then there's a hitch that actually hangs below the vehicle down here and that one looks decent. It doesn't look out of place at all on a Subaru, but with that one, you know you're gonna be able to see it all the time and you actually, you'll lose quite a bit of clearance as well. You know, this one sits up real high from the ground. That other one hangs down a little bit.

So just something to keep in mind and, you know, it kind of depends on how you plan on using your hitch. This hitch is going to have a 2" by 2" receiver tube opening which is a super common size and it'll let you do a lot of different things, you know, pull trailers, use accessories or even a little bit of both. So really helps to kind of open up your opportunities of what you can do with your Subaru. It is going to use the standard 5/8" pin and clip, which keep in mind, one doesn't come with the hitch. If you need one, not a huge deal.

Always grab it here at etrailer. A lot of times too, if you end up buying a new accessory, will come with one, so just something to look out for. The safety chain openings, I'm not super crazy about, to be honest with you, but due to space, it's kind of just what you have to work with. You're actually on top and they're somewhat small, you know, you can still get your hooks up there but something to think about if your trailer has a really large hook, you might have a little trouble. So just keep that in mind.

When it comes to the hitch's weight capacity, this thing will handle just about anything you want to throw at, it's gonna have some good numbers. Maximum gross tongue weight rating is 750 pounds. That' the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch, so just about any size bike rack or cargo carrier, you should be good. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating, it's gonna be 5,000 pounds. That's the amount of weight pulling on the hitch so the weight of your trailer plus anything you might have in or on it. This can be used with the weight distribution system, which is a separate component. What happens when you use it, it's gonna keep your Ascent and your trailer level whenever you're towing it down the road. Those systems are pretty popular on campers and enclosed trailers, things like that, so that's what you're doing, might be worth checking out. But even if you do use that system, the capacity's are to remain the same at 750 and 5,000. And with all that in mind, I do always like to recommend, never a bad idea, just grab your Subaru's owner's manual, that way you can check in there and make sure that your Ascent can handle that much weight safely. Go ahead and grab a couple of measurements now and this will help us figure out what type of accessories will work best. From the ground to the top inside edge of our receiver tube opening, that's about 23-1/2". If you plan on pulling a trailer, chances are pretty good you're gonna need a ball mount that has a drop in the shank, probably that 4-6" range will work for a lot of people or if you're gonna be towing multiple trailers, even an adjustable ball mount might work out pretty well in this situation. And with your accessories, you know, a straight shank, it'll be more than fine as far as ground clearance or if you get one with the rise in it, not a huge deal either. So pretty much whatever will work there. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, that's only gonna be about 2", which is really good. So you shouldn't run into any issues here, but i
