-- Being Traumatized vs. Experiencing Trauma: What’s The Difference? --

One thing that has been coming up frequently in conversations with both colleagues and clients is the difference between the experience of trauma and identifying yourself a “being traumatized.”

It may seem like a tiny linguistic shift -- perhaps unimportant. But what I can say is that this small change in language can have a big impact on your lived experience.

Whenever we use the words “I am…” anything that follows becomes part of our identity, which then becomes locked in place. It’s very difficult -- not impossible, but hard -- to change something that a person identifies with.

However, if you view trauma as a shaping influence on your life that may have blown you temporarily off course, and you see yourself as someone who has the power to reshape your lived experience, you remain in a state of plasticity and power.

Basically, it gives you back your control and takes all the oomph out of the traumatic experience.

(Note that I’m not saying trauma doesn’t or won’t affect us, but that how we view the experience can facilitate or impede our healing.)

Watch this video for more insight on the difference between identifying with your trauma and seeing it as only one of many factors in shaping your life and your personality.

Be sure and leave me a comment. I’d love to know how this lands for you.
