The Vietnam War (Vietnam War in English, Chiến tranh Việt Nam in Vietnamese) also called Second War of Indochina or war against the United States for the Vietnamese, was a war fought between 1955 and 1975 to prevent the reunification of Vietnam under a communist government. The Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) participated with the support of the United States and other nations against the local guerrillas of the National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam (Viet Cong) and the army of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), supported for China and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that between one million and 5.7 million people died, while the United States counted 58,159 deaths and more than 1,700 disappeared, constituting the longest conflict in that country until the war in Afghanistan.

The conflict began with an attempt to unify the two Vietnam in a single coalition government between nationalists, communists and neutrals, according to the initial proposal. The actions of the United States to prevent this reunification, together with a succession of violent, corrupt and inefficient dictatorships imposed by the United States, provoked the armed uprising of several groups united under the self-styled National Liberation Front, Viet Cong, quickly supported by the then Soviet Union and Mao's China. Initially Saigon was losing ground.

With the massive entry of the United States, part of what was lost was recovered. But after the events of 1968, the gradual withdrawal of US troops and the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 began, after which the South fought alone against the Army of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam until its final defeat and reunification of the country on July 2, 1976 as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam of communist regime. The first three stages were distinguished by passing without the formation of the traditional front lines, where terrorist actions and guerrilla warfare proliferated, against "search and destroy" missions, the use of massive bombings and the extensive use of weapons chemical, by the United States. The last phase was a conventional war. But the end of the race was only a pause in the Indochina clashes. Later the invasions of Cambodia and Laos by Vietnam and of this by China would take place. On the contrary, the United States experienced a withdrawal of foreign policy.

The coverage made by the media was permanent, being considered as the first televised conflict in history. This allowed the denunciation of the frequent violations and abuses against Human Rights committed by both sides. However, it is debated whether such coverage constituted the main cause of the growing opposition on the part of Western public opinion towards US intervention.

This opposition and the fact that it was the first military defeat in the United States created a feeling of bad conscience in the American people in the face of a war considered unjust, the so-called Vietnam syndrome. The syndrome gave way to a pacifist movement and lasted until the 1980s, during the Ronald Reagan mandates.The Vietnam War became an icon, still alive today, of social groups and leftist parties. of the world, in addition to an example imitated by other later fighters.
