In which Dr. Corey Olsen opens the discussion with a look at Chapter 1 of The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1.

In this class, we look at Christopher Tolkien's motivations for publishing his father's evolving legendarium, including misunderstandings about the stories included in the Silmarillion and discussions around whether they were "early" or "late" works. We also investigate the first tale, "The Cottage of Lost Play," and its use as a frame story for the other tales, along with Tolkien's ideas about children, fairies and the "perception of depth" that the tales were meant to evoke.
