Welcome to my channel and to this 20-minute Morning Movement Chair Yoga for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). When you're in pain and feel fatigued, being active may be the last thing on your mind. Especially in the morning. I know that's when I have the most stiffness, pain and difficulty getting around. If I don't take the time to gently move my joints and body, it has an impact on the rest of my day.

Morning movement helps with decreasing stiffness, joint pain, stress and increasing mood and overall health and well-being. Research shows that exercise helps to specifically relieve RA symtpoms and improve day-to-day functioning.

Yoga is an ancient practice that combines deep breathing, gentle and flowing movement, poses, meditation, as well as, relaxation. Studies show that yoga has great benefits for people with RA.

The RA Yogi YouTube channel and The Arthritis Society's Youtube channels are great free resources designed specifically for people living with arthritis to start or continue practicing yoga safely from the comfort of your home or outdoor space.

Make sure to speak to your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

All you'll need for this morning movement chair yoga is a yoga mat and a sturdy chair. You can also practice from a wheelchair is that is more accessible and adapt any movement you would like.

If yoga is not your cup of tea, that's totally fine. There are many options to choose from:

Gentle Aerobics (Great for aerobic conditioning and boosting mood)
Aquafit or walking in a pool/gentle swimming (great for aerobic conditioning, range of motion, flexibility and strength without weight bearing)
Biking/Stationary Bike (Great for range of motion, aerobic conditioning, endurance and leg strength)
Take a walk outdoors or on a treadmill (building endurance, weight-management, leg strength and can help aerobic conditioning by increasing your pace slowly over time)

Moving while in a Flare-Up

When experiencing a flare-up, the top priority is to consult your doctor and take time to rest. Be sure to tune in to my channel for "Physiotherapy and Rheumatoid Arthritis" featuring Dr. Behtash Bahkshi, airing on September 25th at 2 PM EST. We will explore topics related to exercise during flare-ups and how he collaborates with his Rheumatoid Arthritis patients to enhance their health and quality of life, including my own journey!
