本曲選自百老匯音樂劇《南北戰爭》。這部音樂劇以美國內戰為背景，透過北方聯邦、南方邦聯和奴隸等不同陣營的視角描繪這場戰爭。〈告訴我的父親〉為一位青年將士臨死前的獨白，他請託戰友替他向父親傳達遺言，字字句句隱含其堅定的信念、光榮殉國的驕傲，和對父親的敬愛。曲末與摯愛的父親珍重道別，真誠的情感令人動容。
