കുറുക്കനും ( Fox ) കുറുനരിയും ( Jackal ) രണ്ടു പേരും കനിഡെ ( Canidae ) കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെട്ട സസ്തനികളാണെങ്കിലും വ്യത്യസ്ത ജനുസുകളിൽ പെട്ട ജീവികൾ ആണ്.
കുറുക്കൻ വൾപസ് ( Vulpes.) ജീനസിലും കുറുനരി ( Jackal ) കനിസ് ( Canis) ജീനസിലും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
കുറുക്കന്മാർ അന്റാർട്ടിക്ക ഒഴിച്ച് സർവ ഭൂഖണ്ഡങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. 37 സ്പീഷിസുകളും സബ് സ്പീഷിസുകളുമായി നിരവധി ഇനം കുറുക്കന്മാർ ഉണ്ട്. ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത് ചെമ്പൻ കുറുക്കന്മാരാണ് ( Vulpes vulpes) . ഹിമാലയ താഴ്വരകൾ മുതൽ കന്യാകുമാരി വരെ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഇനം ബംഗാൾ കുറുക്കൻ ( Vulpes bengalensis ) എന്ന ഇനം ആണ്.
എന്നാൽ കുറുനരികൾ പ്രധാനമായും ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യ, മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ്, തെക്കു കിഴക്കൻ യൂറോപ്പ്, മധ്യ - ഉത്തര ആഫ്രിക്ക തുടങ്ങിയ ഇടങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രം കാണുന്നവയാണ് . നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ കാണുന്ന ഇനം ശ്രീലങ്കൻ കുറുനരി Canis aureus naria ആണ്. ലോകത്തെങ്ങും ആയി മൂന്ന് വിഭാഗം കുറുനരികളാണ് പ്രധാനമായും ഉള്ളത്.
