The wild boar (Sus scrofa), also known as the wild swine,[4] common wild pig,[5] Eurasian wild pig,[6] or simply wild pig, is a suid native to much of Eurasia and North Africa, and has been introduced to the Americas and Oceania. The species is now one of the widest-ranging mammals in the world, as well as the most widespread suiform. The Indian boar (Sus scrofa cristatus) , also known as the Moupin pig, is a subspecies of wild boar native to India, Nepal, Myanmar, western Thailand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.തെക്ക് കിഴക്ക് ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഇൻഡോനേഷ്യ ഫിലിപ്പീൻസ് തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ ദ്വീപുകളിൽ ആയിരിക്കും പന്നികൾ ആദ്യമായി പരിണമിച്ച ഉണ്ടായത് എന്നാണ് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത്. അവിടെനിന്നും യൂറേഷ്യയിലും ഉത്തരാഫ്രിക്കയിലും അവ പരന്നു. പിന്നീട് മനുഷ്യർ വഴി അമേരിക്കയിലും ഓഷ്യാനയിലും എത്തപ്പെട്ടു. കാൾ ലീനസ് ആണ് 1758 ൽ കാട്ടുപന്നിയ്ക്ക് Sus scrofa എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രനാമം നൽകിയത് . നിലവിൽ 16 സബ് സ്പീഷിസുകളായി ഇവ വർഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് അവയെത്തന്നെ തലയോട്ടിയുടെ വലിപ്പം കണ്ണീർ ഗ്രന്ഥിയുടെ അസ്ഥി രൂപം എന്നിവയെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി നാല് ഭൂപ്രദേശിക ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളായും തിരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
