To create this Iraq series, I teamed up with my guides at Bil Weekend (  / bilweekend   | https://bilweekend.com/) and my good friend and fellow travel filmmaker Tasos Karantakos (  / agreeksolo  .

With another evening in Southern Iraq ahead of me, I began my latest Iraqi adventure at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers before heading to the city of Basrah for dinner. We had an incredible Iraqi Street Food Tour, followed by a MASSIVE SEAFOOD, SHRIMP and Middle Eastern Food FEAST!

GARDEN OF EDEN: Along the banks at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers is an ancient tree. It is believed that this is the famous tree from the Bible, where Adam and Eve committed the world’s first sin. Of course, that would also mean that this entire area was once the famous Garden of Eden!

EXPLORING BASRAH: After driving into Basrah, we visited a shop selling incredible leek sambousak sandwiches with various sauces. I also tried some chicken livers from a nearby vendor.

SPICE MARKET: We walked to the local spice market, where we tried a pressed apricot candy called amardeen. I also tried halkun, a sweet almost identical to Turkish delights. Another vendor also let us try some cashews coated in tomato.

SUNSET BOAT RIDE: From there, we headed to the shore and took a quick boat ride at sunset. On the quick ride, we saw Saddam Hussein’s boat capsized in the gulf.

BERHYAH: Before dinner, we stopped by this popular local shop, which specializes in sweets and confections made with dates. I tried several varieties of madgooga, which are date balls covered coconut and various seeds and nuts!

AL HASSUN RESTAURANT: At Al Hassun Restaurant, we had their mind-blowing shrimp with sauce, as well as their shrimp with basmati rice, and dolmas. All of them were exceptional, but the shrimp with sauce is now one of my favorite dishes of all-time!
