Aulus Gellius was a Roman author, educated in Athens. This is a story of Stoic philosophy inspired by his record, in Attic Nights, of a voyage from Cassiopa to Brundisium over the Ionian sea.

During the voyage, a violent storm threatened to capsize the ship and drown the passengers. Aboard the ship was a Stoic philosopher with whom Aulus Gellius discusses fear and how we can manage it, prevent it from controlling our actions, and choose reason over panic.
