The Samburu National Reserve became a wildlife protected area in 1948.

Rodney Elliott, senior ranger of the National Reserve, suggested to the Samburu District, that the north of the river Ewaso Ngiro, should have its own reserve.

The Ministers of local Governments agreed and the reserve was officially established in 1962.

In 1963 the local ministers and governments decided that the Reserve was to be administered by the African District Council of Samburu and by the Samburu communities.

The reserve is now a community based wilderness.

George and Joy Adamson famous conservationists grew the Lioness Elsa and then released her in the wild, you can see a plaque at the entrance of the reserve.

We stayed here for two nights at Samburu Lodge in September 2011.
We enjoyed going on the safari game drives and seeing all the animals in the wilderness.

Next week Samburu National Reserve Part 2.

Please watch to the end and use language subtitles if needed.
