Iron Balusters are perfect for both contemporary and traditional stairway designs. In some of our previous videos, we showed you how to install iron balusters on level runs. In this video, we are installing Hollow Single Knuckle and Double Knuckle Balusters from our Versatile Series line.

In this video, we show you a common technique to find the spacing for your Iron Balusters on steps. This is a follow-up to our How To Install Iron Balusters on Steps video. If you are in the installation process, please refer back to that video. The link is in the description below.

(0:18) Mark Your Layout
Once your handrail is mounted, you will want to mark your baluster layout. Grab 2” masking tape or painters tape and run it on the tread directly under the center of your handrail. This will allow you to easily see your pencil marks without marking on the tread itself. To get the location of this line, find the center point of the newel post and then put your square on the outside of the tread. This will align the end of your combination square with the center of the newel post, which should be the center of your handrail as well.

(0:54) Find Your Spacing
Whenever you are laying out balusters, a good principal to follow is to line up the front edge of your baluster with the front edge of your riser. This will keep your layout repeatable and consistent. Measure the length of the run without the overhang nosing -- this means from the front of one riser to the front of the other riser. In this video, our measurement is 11”. Each baluster is a ½” in diameter. Depending on the number of balusters that you will install on each tread, subtract ½” for each from the run measurement. Then divide by that number to give you the measurement of the spacing between the center of each of the balusters. For example, in this installation, we installed three balusters. That meant we needed to subtract 1 ½” from 11”, which gave us a total of 9.5”. Then we divided this total by 3, which tells us that the spacing for baluster should be rounded up to 3 5/32”. Using that information, we started at the front and marked each of the center points on the tread 3 5/32” apart.

As a tip, it may be helpful to use a jig to maintain consistency for each tread. This will help you avoid the mistake of messing up on your treads, which you cannot afford to make a mistake on. Individually making measurements on each tread with a tape measure for each run opens up the possibility of error or inconsistency. However, you will need to ensure that each run is the same measurement.
