After being born with pectus excavatum, a minor birth defect, 15 year old Lewis Blackman was given an opportunity to have a procedure done to correct it. This procedure should’ve been one he recovered from fairly quickly, but he was not recovering whatsoever, in fact his condition was progressively getting worse. And despite the concern from his family, the care team was unable to recognize the critical condition their patient was in, eventually leading to the Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Act to prevent a case of medical negligence like this from occurring again.
