Rising sea levels and failing infrastructure are leading to flooded communities, and extreme heat events are threatening public health, while devastating periods of drought lead to increased danger of wildfire activity. From the Appalachians to the Chesapeake, the Commonwealth is seeing those effects first-hand. As funders, we want to know how we can make an impact and help our communities grapple with the ever-growing dangers of a changing climate. One way is by partnering with local government and civic leaders and other funders to bring the Resilience Adaptation Feasibility Tool (RAFT) to your community. The RAFT leverages expertise and resources of multidisciplinary partners and diverse stakeholders to assist localities and sovereign tribal nations striving to increase their resilience to climate change. Since 2015 The RAFT has worked with 26 localities (3 cities and 23 rural counties and towns) in coastal Virginia. It has recently begun adapting its model to work with localities in SW Virginia as well as to support sovereign Tribal Nations in Virginia.
