After learning this technique for making rag rugs, you might never braid another rag rug again! This rug is so simple. There are two techniques for constructing Amish or Toothbrush rag rugs. One involves knots, but this video is using the easier method. Basically, you are using an embroidery stitch known as a blanket stitch to create a rug constructed of joined fabric strips. You can make your toothbrush "needle" from the handle of a toothbrush that has a hole at the end or you can purchase a toothbrush rag rug tool/needle at fabric stores, amazon, online, etc. Cottons work best for this project, but I have used all sorts of fabrics. This is a great project to recycle old clothing and bed linens as well. A good guide on how much fabric you'll need is apprx 10 yards in strips (or about 3 full size flat sheets).
