Tajikistan is the most mountainous area of the former Soviet Union. A terrible civil war broke out here right after the collapse of the USSR. And there’s war-torn Afghanistan just across the border. Here is where the Pamir mountains rise next to plains with lemon trees. Here is where they got rid of Soviet symbols, but Russia remained their friend and protector.
