"Hey, Slavs" is a patriotic song dedicated to the Slavs which was used as the national anthem of various countries during the 20th century.

Its lyrics were first written in 1834 under the title "Hey, Slovaks" ("Hej, Slováci") by Samuel Tomášik and it has since served as the ethnic anthem of the Pan-Slavic movement, organizational anthem of the Sokol physical education and political movement, and the national anthem of Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro. The song is also considered to be the unofficial second ethnic anthem of the Slovaks. Its melody is based on "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego", which has also been the national anthem of Poland since 1926, but the Yugoslav variation has a slower tempo, is more accentuated, and does not repeat the last four lines as it repeats the last two lines.

On 25 June 1991, the declarations of independence of Slovenia and Croatia effectively ended SFRY’s existence. By April 1992, the further declarations of independence by two other republics, Macedonia, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, left only Serbia and Montenegro within the Federation.

These two remaining republics declared the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) on 27 April 1992. In 2003, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was reconstituted and re-named as a State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. This union effectively ended following Montenegro's formal declaration of independence on 3 June 2006 and Serbia's on 5 June 2006.

Lyrics

Hej Slaveni, jošte živi
R[ij]eč (duh) naših d[je]dova
Dok za narod srce b[ije]
Njihovih sinova
Živi, živi duh slavenski
Živjet će v[je]kov'ma
𝄆 Zalud pr[ije]ti ponor pakla
Zalud vatra groma 𝄇
Nek se sada i nad nama
Burom sve raznese
St[je]na puca, dub se lama
Zemlja nek se trese
Mi stojimo postojano
Kano klisurine
𝄆 Proklet bio izdajica
Svoje domovine! 𝄇

Translation

Hey, Slavs, herein lives on
the sacred word of our lineage
as long as the heart beats for our nation
from son to grandson!
The Slavic spirit lives on
forever in unity.
𝄆 Infernal abysses do not frighten us,
nor the blazes of thunder. 𝄇
May a bora devastate
and rage above us!
Oak trees and ashen rocks will crack,
the earth will cave in:
For we stand at the doorstep of
gorges and bulwarks!
𝄆 Cursed is he who betrays his
homeland to the enemy! 𝄇
