In this animation, GEA Westfalia Separator illustrates the working principle of their decanter centrifuge.

GEA Westfalia decanters are horizontally arranged scroll centrifuges. The product is fed into a conical-cylindrical bowl. The solid particles settle on the wall of the centrifuge bowl under the influence of centrifugal force and are transported to the solids outlet by a scroll which rotates at a slightly higher speed than the centrifuge bowl. Clarified liquid flows through the centrifuge bowl in the opposite direction and discharges freely under gravity or under pressure by a centripetal pump.

Clarifying decanters are used to separate solids from a suspension to obtain a virtually solids-free, clarified liquid.
