Well managed native vegetation and food plots can improve any hunting location! See the plans for this 40 acres that will use both these resources to improve the deer hunting and habitat.

In this video: turning unmanaged fescue pastures into food plots; prescribed fire; creating cover and bedding; timber stand improvement (TSI); hunting strategies; blind locations; creating bottlenecks; patterning deer, and much more!

The huge advantage of hunting flat ground is that the wind seldom swirls where the topography is flat. The wind does change directions as fronts pass, etc., but it rarely swirls and certainly doesn’t swirl on a constant basis. Swirling winds are often caused by changes in topography. Changes in topography create eddies where the wind sinks and rises. Rapid changes of topography also create temperature gradients (warm air rises and cool air sinks). These temperature gradients cause thermals or air moving based on slope and temperature.

On this property there are open grown trees. Trees with less competition often produce acorns more frequently and more acorns than trees surrounded by competition. In addition, acorns produced by open grown trees are often larger than trees that have a lot of competition.

Another very important factor is that acorns from open grown trees often seem to mature and drop a bit earlier than oaks growing where there’s a lot of competition. This is very important information. Where the first acorns drop is often an extremely hot spot for deer!

Fescue pastures on this hunting property. There were no row crops or other cultivated crops within the likely range of a deer. Hence the primary source of quality and palatable food were the plots on this deer hunting property. Hence he will knows exactly where to hunt.
