On 8 March 1942, the Dutch East Indies government capitulated to the Japanese. The Netherlands Indies Radio Broadcasting Company NIROM finalised its broadcasts. Presenter Bart Garthoff (1913-1997) announced the famous words: "Dit is de NIROM te Bandoeng. Wij gaan nu sluiten luisteraars. Vaarwel, tot betere tijden. Leve het Vaderland, leve de Koningin." Afterwards the national anthem "Wilhelmus" was played and, to the surprise of many listeners, this continued for another week. When the Japanese authorities found out what this music on the radio was, three NIROM employees, one of them was the Director, were arrested and executed.
