Did you know that in 2024, approximately 153,000 individuals are expected to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer? This type of cancer, also known as colon cancer, is a growing health concern affecting individuals of all ages, including those under 50. In fact, between 19,000 and 20,000 diagnoses are anticipated in people under 50, with an expected mortality rate of between 3,500 and 4,000 individuals. These alarming figures underline the need to proactively address this health issue.

So, what is the primary risk factor for developing colon cancer? Diet plays a crucial role, especially a diet low in fiber and high in ultra-processed foods. Despite some underestimating the importance of fiber in our diet, evidence suggests otherwise. Fiber is not only essential for digestive health, but its absence and the excessive consumption of processed foods can significantly contribute to the development of this disease.

Beyond diet, adequate hydration and consumption of fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds are vital for maintaining a healthy colon. But how exactly does a fiber-rich diet benefit our colon? Fiber contributes to the proper formation and propulsion of stools, aids in water and electrolyte absorption, and is essential for a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a critical role in our overall health.

However, preventing colon cancer isn't limited to diet alone. Physical activity, including both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training, has shown significant benefits. These exercises not only improve intestinal motility but can also reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the colon, both associated with a lower risk of cancer.

But what else can we do to protect our digestive health? Managing stress and maintaining adequate sleep are also essential components. There is a bidirectional axis between the brain and the gut that, if disrupted, can contribute to the development of gastrointestinal problems, including colon cancer. Therefore, maintaining a balanced life and effectively managing stress is crucial.

In terms of prevention and early diagnosis, what steps can be taken? Regular colonoscopies, especially for those over 45 or with a family history of colon cancer, are vital. This procedure is not only safe but also effective in detecting issues before they become more serious.

Finally, beyond dietary and lifestyle factors, it's imperative to attend regular consultations with healthcare professionals for check-ups and personalized advice. Active prevention and early diagnosis are undoubtedly the best strategies to combat colon cancer and promote optimal colon and overall body health.
