1996 saw a huge bump in sales in the already popular SUV market, and now, not only were the mid-size SUV markets skyrocketing, so were the full-size three-row SUV's and a new segment was making its way, the "Sport Cute". The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4 would make their debut. Geo had their Tracker and Suzuki had the ever-quirky and hyper fun-to-drive 2-seat targa X-90. We now know them as the compact crossovers, but in 1996, that term hasn't been invented yet. The Explorer from 1996 is a very different animal than the Explorer of 2020. The Explorer of 1996 is more along the size of the new 2020 Ford Escape, shy of just a couple of inches. We have grown and our vehicles have grown, too! So, today, take a look at what was once the king of the highways and anywhere between gas stations! The Eddie Bauer Explorer is the ultimate expression of the outdoorsman (outdoors-person) and luxury. Only the Limited would top it in the lineup.
