There are strong echoes of I Got Plenty of Nuttin’ from Porgy and Bess in this song.  The central character considers himself a free spirit, travelling from place to place, happy to sleep beneath the trees, a romancer without real interest in the many women he pursues.  For him, a lost love is as easily replaced as a lost shoe!
While there is little of particular appeal in the character of the young man, I loved the shape of the melody and the possibilities it had for arrangement.
