Low-income families in San Diego County continue to face financial challenges two years after the start of the pandemic and the challenges do not seem to be letting up anytime soon amid rising gas prices and record-high inflation.

The San Diego Food Bank and our network of more than 500 community partners are currently providing food assistance to more than half a million people throughout the county. This number includes working-poor families, children living in poverty and seniors living on a fixed income like Jim Leibman.

Leibman currently receives nutritional support through the Food Bank’s Senior Food Program, which provides 45-pound boxes of food to seniors living at or below the poverty line every month.

As gas prices continue to rise along with the cost of food, the Food Bank is also paying more for less food and needs the community’s support as the demand for assistance in accessing free food in the community is starting to spike.
