Okinawa (沖和), also known as the " Hawaii of Japan'', is situated in the southern part of Japan. Regardless of many misconceptions, it is one of the best tourist attractions in Japan with many exclusive cuisines, stargazing spots, skydiving, historical castles and coral islands. Due to its distance from the mainland, you might be concerned about the security provided by this place but surprisingly it is a very safe place. People here keep their door unlocked or even opened most of the time.

Okinawa was not part of Japan until the late 1800s. It was then an independent part named Ryukyu which was given to Japan as a democratic exchange by the USA. The most important heritage site of this province is "Gusuku sites and related properties of the kingdom of Ryukyu" which was listed by UNESCO in 2000 as a combined world heritage site.
