This is a #live #concert recording in the Raga Chandrakauns on Santoor, performed by #santoor exponent Pt. Sandip Chatterjee in the year 2023... Tabla was accompanied by Shri Kousik Banerjee. Chandrakauns is an important Kauns melody. It is the yin to the yang of Malkauns. Its prakriti is characterized as more chanchal. The shuddha Ni gives the impression of an anguished pull to the shadja. This tension can be exploited to create an urgency, and angst as opposed to the possibility of dejection in the Malkauns komal Ni that gets pulled towards the madhyam. Chandrakaus raga can be depicted with shringar rasa as well as bhakti rasa. The shuddha Ni plays a vital part in this. There are different ‘anga’ of Chandrakaus raga, which helps in exploring different moods the raga can create. Chandrakaus is a relatively newly popular raga. Though it is of Odav jaati, it is difficult to perform as there as many andolanas and gamaks. The beauty of it is discovered in slow and peaceful renditions of the raga rather than at a fast pace. Layakri can also be explored in this raga.
