It is believed that the age-old wisdom of Shugendo holds all the answers that man has always sought. This religion combines Buddhist, Shinto and Taoist practices with esoteric magic!
The Yamabushi, as Shugendo monks are called, hide in centuries-old cedar forests to undergo grueling physical and mental training to obtain supernatural powers. Today, however, after more than a thousand years, this religion is disappearing and there are very few believers left in Japan. I went to meet them to document their beliefs before it's too late.
