We all enjoyed a very blessed gathering at Saturday's Modular San Diego show, again generously hosted by CM Curatorial in Logan Heights–just feet from Chicano Park and the Coronado Bridge.
The kaleidoscopic spectrum of tones and tunes somehow all harmoniously flowed from one performer to the next; a natural progression.

The electro acoustic duo Omniharmonium opened the afternoon with an atmospheric journey into deep space via bass flute processed by modular; a golden-era sci-fi soundtrack. windswept textures, drawn-out drones, rumbling galactic storms: distant nebulae obscuring hints of a vast cosmic engine. atonal loops reassemble into a beautiful slow melody. the flute gradually diminishes, letting the modular ring out the last notes into the void.

teepee continued the cinematic excursion with a gorgeous, melancholy arrangement of slow drones, minor chords, haunting vocal fragments. plucked melodies backed by the pulsing bass drone spiral around a steady rhythm: muted phrases shape themselves into a steady percussion kit, resounding from deep within a midnight forest. a dreamlike chorus of rain and birdsong shimmers across the soundfield as the set ends.

ioflow presented an emotional ambient arc in three parts, comprising modular reimaginations of prior works: “sun bubbles,” “fall creek unit,” and “the deep glow of dusk.” pure, delicate tones intertwined in gentle melodies and flowing counterpoint, layered against a warm, saturated sea of textural loops. there were tears in the crowd during and afterward. the transformative power of music: sharing sense-memories, sharing peace, healing, and heart.

Pablo Perez brought the afternoon to a close with a dense array of audio strata and staticbeats. joplin ragtime viewed through aged, rapidly flipping film. thunderous foley fragments built into energized percussion, shifting into warped, sped-up snatches of melodies and cloudy fractured drums, mulched with crackling tape; as if all the day’s sounds had been stirred together into a tasty salsa gumbo.
