This was our glorious return outdoors in 2024, and we chose our Favorite from last year, Kate Sessions Park on Mt. Soledad. We had a special guest (Karnblack, from Colorado), and the weather was perfect. Enjoy this lovely write up of the day, as always from @ioflow

"We returned to our picturesque outdoor location on a beautifully sunny day. each performance somehow flowed into the next as a collection of science fiction storytelling: each with its own unique energy, yet serendipitous in alignment.

The performers, in order: Doug From Bellefleur, Alex Weber, Karnblack, and Fredrik Farnstrom.

Doug From Bellefleur opened the afternoon with a meditative piece examining humanity in a disassociated technological landscape. thrumming rumbles, high harmonics, an atmospheric collage of clicks and clacks echoing into a cavernous space—all asked the question in each chopped-and-diced sample: “how do you feel?”

Next, first-time MSD performer Alex Weber, attired in construction/hazard regalia, brought a diverse array of syncopated rhythms and bitcrushed acid textures, building layers of industrial percussion. an assortment of steady grooves and catchy riffs crafted from pixelated raw materials, spanning a spectrum of danceable bass blurbs and the deepest kicks, verging into dub territory.

Special guest Karnblack, all the way from colorado, introduced a warbling dissonant duet that morphed into a stuttering drone, followed by a fast cascade of moody noir beats; a driving evocative rhythm. darkened alley descents and mysterious silhouettes, outlined in growly brass, dopplered arpeggios, and haunting pads. the beats begin to break up, leaving only the tonal motif, slowing to a halt, waiting for the next chapter to unfold.

Fredrik Farnstrom, performing with a case full of self-designed & self-built modules, brought the day to a close with the final bit of cinematic storytelling, immediately launching into polymetric techno. the sonic journey now shifts into rapid pursuit, skimming rooftops, soaring up to the edge of space, weaving between orbital shipyards and reefstations. percussion heartbeats pound faster, backed by subsonic bass. pulse-blips hint at the rapid cycles of a complex computational matrix, diminishing to a few solo elements: a sweeping turn to contemplate the silent stars."
