Waitomo District Council is $40 million in debt and has raised rates to be the highest in the country to try and meet infrastructure costs. The impact on small towns like Te Kuiti and Waitomo Village has been immense with residents still suffering Covid related unemployment and economic downturn. Residents Michelle Wi and Katrina Winn are trying to help by establishing a community garden, and setting up a petition. Land manager Charles Tutahi speaks out about the impact of rising rates on farmers, and Deputy Mayor John Robertson defends the stance of the Council.
