Best of America by Horseback covered the 90th Annual Chincoteague Island Pony Round-up, an annual event to support the Volunteer Fire Department and entire community on this tiny tourist town. Made famous by Marguerite Henry's book, Misty of Chincoteague, the annual pony round-up, swim and auction has been an annual event since 1925. The fire department owns and maintains a herd of ponies, believed to have originated on Assateague Island from a wrecked Spanish Galleon off Virginia's coast. They are only allowed to keep up to 150 ponies on Assateague Islands National Seashore, so to maintain that number, the herd is rounded up each July, they swim the channel to Chincoteague Island and some are sold at auction. Thousands of people come to this event every year.
