Learn more about continuous, online monitoring of proteins using UV absorbance. Ocean Insight offers robust, scalable sensing tools, and application knowledge, design and engineering expertise, to help manufacturers navigate process challenges. See how we use an Ocean HDX high-sensitivity spectrometer to capture real-time protein concentration values, and then convert the data into answers that are meaningful to the user.

Continuous protein monitoring and benefits

One of the most powerful uses of spectroscopy is its ability to perform continuous monitoring of some process — at the lab scale or the industrial scale. Ocean Insight provides a reliable, quantitative measurement system that never goes home. You can think of it like having someone on your QC line that's always looking perfectly at your product, and who is available 24/7 to give you reliable answers.

It's essential to set up a spectral system in a way that can continuously monitor your sample rather than just take point measurements. This is what we're looking at in the protein monitoring demo — specifically, a microfluidic setup using one of our FIA Flow Cells. The concepts illuminated with microfluidics hold true at the industrial level as well.

Overview of the demo results and our findings

The sample we examine is BSA, or bovine serum albumin, a common protein that can be used as a substitute for other, more serious compounds. By building a Schematic in OceanView to dynamically output grams per liter of BSA without doing on-the-fly calculations by hand, we demonstrate how to quickly convert an absorbance into a concentration value automatically using our software.

Lineworkers and technicians no longer have to look at wavelengths, counts, absorbance values and intensities to view pertinent information. In sum, we examine the power of setting up these dynamic flowing systems and building a schematic in such a way that it boils the spectroscopy into a meaningful output.
