The seal looks chubby and healthy, but the rope looped around his neck would have changed that quickly. The rescuers could feel how severe his wound was as they pulled the rope out. The seal visibly reacted to the sudden pain when the rope was removed. This is the part of their job the rescuers hate the most—causing pain to help. Without their intervention, it was only a matter of time before starvation, suffocation, or infection claimed his life.
