We've hit 6,000 subscribers!

To celebrate this milestone and to thank you for your support, we've created an Ask Matt Anything (AMA) episode out of questions that you left on our previous podcast episodes. You guys ask great questions—we really enjoy thinking about the points you raise and gaining a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of a given topic ourselves.

So here it is: an AMA buffet of longevity-related topics, from the effects of metformin and calorie restriction to methods for self-experimentation to what is special about long-lived species and much more.

We'll be releasing another special episode when we get to 10,000 subscribers, so stay tuned (and get your friends to subscribe).

0:50 Introduction
1:54 Assuming that metformin reduces adiposity in muscles + you maintain the same strength + you lose lean mass, how might metformin affect longevity?
4:23 Should you take metformin if you're not diabetic/pre-diabetic?
6:10 Can we reverse biological age yet?
11:06 What do you think of Bryan Johnson? Is he slowing his rate of biological aging?
13:26 If a comprehensive bloodwork analysis of a 60-year-old man suggests that his biological age is 52, does that mean this man's bloodwork levels are what you'd expect to see for a 52-year-old?
16:43 Can rapamycin slow the progression of autoimmune disease such as ankylosing spondylitis?
18:45 What is Matt's opinion on taurine?
21:43 Are fisetin and calcium alpha-ketoglutarate (Ca-AKG) good alternatives to rapamycin?
25:03 What is Matt's opinion on Epitalon? Why hasn't it been studied more broadly?
32:06 What instigates aging? What is biologically distinct about long-lived species?
34:33 Which of a high- or low-protein diet is optimal in aging?
39:41 What is a good nutritional/vitamins/omega-3 blood test to use?
40:50 What is the best way to ask my GP about rapamycin if they are not experts on the topic?
42:13 Does caffeine extend lifespan? Do the benefits of caffeine outweigh its negative effects on e.g. sleep?
45:44 Why would jellybeans give you a glucose spike? Aren't they about 50 percent fructose?
48:34 From a thermodynamic perspective, caloric restriction should cause people to lose weight consistently. Why is this not the case in practice?
54:58 Would supplementing with methylene blue counteract reducing glutathione?
57:23 How do you measure the half-life of rapamycin?
1:03:50 Thanks for your support!

Hi, I'm Matt Kaeberlein. I spent the first few decades of my career doing scientific research into the biology of aging, trying to understand the finer details of how humans age in order to facilitate translational interventions that promote healthspan and improve quality of life. Now I want to take some of that knowledge out of the lab and into the hands of people who can really use it.

On this podcast I talk about all things aging and healthspan, from supplements and nutrition to the latest discoveries in longevity research. My goal is to lift the veil on the geroscience and longevity world and help you apply what we know to your own personal health trajectory. I care about quality science and will always be honest about what I don't know. I hope you'll find these episodes helpful!
