Calung rantay or calung renteng is a traditional form of hanging bamboo xylophone still played in the area of Leles in Cianjur, West Java. Farmers like Pak Adeng here play calung rantay in the fields to scare off monkeys and other pests. The repertoire is unique to this area and includes more than thirty pieces, with musicians often playing the calung in pairs. A modern handheld form of calung (calung jinjing) has been wildly popular in West Java (especially the calung superstar Darso, who featured in dozens of cassettes), but this old school hanging calung, once widespread, is now an almost dead tradition kept alive by a handful of old men.
