We spent a week at Sugar Point Resort on Leech Lake. I have been jigging walleye out of Leech Lake for 40 years but most people in the fish cleaning house were trolling and having more success than we were for a couple of days. I think mostly due to the warmer than average temperatures. It was 15 to 20 degrees warmer than average. It felt like August instead of September!
It was also super windy every day but the first, with huge white caps, which made any kind of fishing very hard. The thing I really like about jigging , is that you feel the bite and either catch the fish or miss but in trolling the fish catches itself. It is kind of boring to me but to each his own. If it is putting fish in the box , I am willing to switch. Also by jigging you will catch a mixed bag of fish that you will not catch trolling, including perch, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, bass and northern. Even an occasional eelpout!
We caught a few walleye the first couple days but by the 4th day we got on a school and picked up 6 in about an hour! Overall we had a good trip with many jumbo perch, some northern, some crappie, a couple of bluegills and sunfish and walleye. It was hard fishing with long days spent on the water but if you put the time in you will have success! Next fishing trip will be ice fishing on Devils Lake in North Dakota!
Thanks for watching!
