Threaded inserts are usually being used to connect wooden parts which should be removable. If you use regular wood screws and you'll remove them few times, the hole in the wood will get larger and the connection will be loose.
With threaded inserts, you can install and remove the screws many times and keep it tight.
There are different types of threaded inserts, but the installation idea is usually the same.
